Hope of Family's Executive Director Participates in National Foundational Learning Symposium to Enhance Education Outcomes

  • March 27th, 2024

Mr. IYAMUREMYE Nshuti Augustin, the Executive Director of Hope of Family, recently graced the two-day National Foundational Learning Symposium 2024 with his presence. The symposium, themed "Delivery for Learning- Implementation of the Foundational Learning Strategy for Improved Learning Outcomes in Early Grades," marks the 5th consecutive convening since its inception in 2021.

The symposium provided a platform for partners and stakeholders to engage in robust discussions and share experiences. Key points underscored during the deliberations included how parents can best support children to enhance learning at school and home as well as Mobilizing the community and parents for enhanced learning outcomes.

Distinguished speakers such as Hon. Gaspard Twagirayezu, Minister of Education, Dr. Sahr Kpundeh, Country Manager for World Bank Rwanda, and Dr. Aliou Tall, Education Office Director at USAID/Rwanda, alongside Dr. Bernard Bahati, Director General of NESA etc…, enriched the forum with their expertise. Topics ranged from "Strengthening Instruction, Curriculum, and Materials for Better Foundational Learning" to "Parent and Community Support and Measuring Learning Outcomes."

Highlighting the critical role of parental involvement in education, recent research conducted by Hope of Family in Shyogwe sector in 2018 revealed stark statistics. A staggering 90% of households were found not to allocate time for children's revision at home, while 80% did not visit their children at school. Recognizing this gap as a significant impediment to academic success, Hope of Family has embarked on initiatives to address these challenges.

In response, Hope of Family has pioneered initiatives to bridge this gap, notably through parental training programs on Parental Involvement in Children’s education. Through these sessions, beneficiaries receive guidance on fostering a conducive learning environment, providing revision time, and engaging in their children's academic activities. Currently, over 370 children who are being supported by Hope of Family to attend Nursery and Primary schools are experiencing increased parental engagement, regular school visits, and dedicated revision time at home.

As Rwanda continues its journey towards educational excellence, collaborative efforts such as these symposiums and grassroots interventions are instrumental in fostering a conducive learning environment for all children.
