Adult Literacy and capacity building

At Hope of Family, we recognize that a child’s first classroom is the home, and that empowered parents are the foundation of a child’s success. When parents are equipped with the tools to learn, they can break cycles of illiteracy and poverty, and in turn, open doors of opportunity for their children.

That’s why we began our journey by investing in Adult Literacy Schools in the communities where we work. Each cohort of parents embarks on an intensive six-month learning journey, gaining essential literacy and numeracy skills that transform not only their own lives but also the futures of their families.

Parents who were once limited by illiteracy can now read, write, and confidently support their children’s education at home. They are able to make informed decisions, engage with schools, and become active contributors to their communities.

To date, 819 adult learners have graduated from our literacy program—parents who are now rewriting the story of what’s possible for their children.

But we don’t stop at education. After graduation, we organize parents into savings and credit groups, providing them with opportunities to access seed capital, strengthen financial resilience, and build sustainable livelihoods. These groups not only promote economic empowerment but also foster solidarity, ensuring parents continue to uplift each other long after the classroom experience ends.

Through this initiative, families are gaining the knowledge, confidence, and economic stability needed to create an environment where children can thrive, dream, and succeed.

Because when parents rise, children rise with them.
